One of the greatest pastimes and hobbies across the globe is stamp collecting.  It is particularly popular in the United States with an estimated 20 million people undertaking this hobby.  What do you know about stamp collecting?  Regardless of whether you are an enthusiastic collector or simply a person who wishes to begin this hobby, stamp collecting can be great fun.  Therefore, what things do you need to be aware of in order to begin this type of hobby?

First of all, it is important to be aware of the fact that there are numerous types of stamps.  It is typical that the older the stamp is, the more valuable it becomes.  However, there are also those special, limited edition stamps, as well as holiday or special occasion stamps, and many more that are worth much more than the regular stamp.

It is also important to note that there are some individuals that only collect postage stamps from the United States or those that collect stamps from other countries also.  It was Britain that issued the very first postage stamp back in 1840, and stamp collecting began in the late 1800’s.

Children and teenagers were the main category to begin collecting stamps as a pastime.  A majority of adults would associate this pastime as being a childish hobby, and one that responsible people would outgrow as they became adults.  However, nowadays, this is simply not the case.

As time went by, the hobby of stamp collecting grew enormously.  There are now tools and equipment designed to make stamp collecting simpler and more fun.  For instance, the creation of special archival books came about in order to preserve the stamps that individuals collect.  These archive books enable the collector to take great care of old stamps whilst keeping them in good condition for many years to come.

These special archive books were in fact adapted from photo albums that individuals used to protect their stamps.  These books come in various sizes, shapes and styles.

Other great tools that are used by stamp collectors are stamp tongs and magnifying glasses.  Whilst there are some great tools to make stamp collecting more easy, there is nothing that is particularly essential in order to begin this hobby.

Stamp collecting can be begun by an individual by asking friends and family members to save the stamps from their incoming mail.  Whilst stamps can be found on business mail, the more unique stamps from the United States postal service can be found on personal mail.  This is because a majority of businesses use automated stamps or online postage systems nowadays, whereas personal mail will still have the classic postage stamp.
